Every day, sun, wind, and dry air pull water out of the soil and out of the vine's leaves. That combined loss is called evapotranspiration — in effect, what your vineyard spent in water that day.
There's no shortage of ways to estimate that number. You could install a network of soil-moisture sensors across the property, or open one of the many free apps that promise a daily evapotranspiration figure. Both come with real drawbacks.
A sensor network is accurate right where it's buried, but it's expensive to install and maintain, and only tells you about the handful of spots a sensor happens to sit in. Free apps solve the cost problem, but usually lean on the nearest official weather station — which can be many kilometres from your actual vines — and on a generic assumption about what's growing there, which rarely matches how your vineyard is actually cultivated.
